Girls Golf UPDATE: Vikings dethrone Edgewood for Badger South crown
Submitted by admin on Wed, 09/25/2013 - 20:44
Senior Becky Klongland has always been known as the No. 1 golfer for the Stoughton girls golf team with her consistent play, and the Badger South Conference meet Wednesday, Sept. 25, was no exception.
Klongland shot a 73 to take second overall and finished the season with No. 1 all-conference honors, but that isn’t what propelled Stoughton (326) to its first Badger South title in school history. Klongland alone did not end Madison Edgewood’s (334) 12-year reign as conference champions.
It was junior Tayler Wise picking up an 85 out of the No. 4 spot. It was junior Kailey Taebel battling through four rough holes on her back nine to finish strong with an 87.
It was junior Ashli Stolen with a sixth-overall 81, helping her earn No. 7 all-conference. Stolen also had to play with Edgewood junior Tess Hackworthy – who took first overall with a 72 and finished No. 2 all-conference – and not let it get into her head.
“I knew this would be a good year for us, because we have all been improving and getting better,” Stolen said. “We have all just been working together, and it is nice to have a victory for once.”
Oregon was third overall with a 339, led by senior Morgan McCorkle who was fourth overall with a 77 and finished No. 4 all-conference. Milton’s Maddie McCue (77) was third and took No. 5 all-conference, and Monona Grove’s Mikayla Hauck (88) was No. 6 all-conference. Madison Edgewood's Caroline Lake (79) was fifth overall.
Stoughton plays in the Watertown regional at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2. The venue originally was the Watertown Country Club, but it has now been changed to Old Hickory Golf Course in Beaver Dam.
