Explosion on Sundt Lane Stoughton Fire, EMS and police responded to an explosion at a single-family residence on the 1100 block of Sundt Lane about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing a loud boom then seeing an individual on fire emerge from the home, ripping off his own clothes in a panic. MedFlight was called to transport the injured man. The cause of the fire is not yet known.



Pleasant Springs rollover crash still under investigation
The driver of a car failed to negotiate a curve while traveling south on Williams Drive and ended up airborne, according to a report released by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.

Mayor's $11 million budget gets flak
In a three-hour review of her proposed 2011 budget, Mayor Donna Olson took some sharp criticism from some Stoughton alders last Tuesday night.

Ald. David McKichan called the 2.82 percent property tax increase in Olson’s $11 million budget “unacceptable” and told fellow City Council members last week that cutting capital spending isn’t a good long-term solution and the city should look at cutting personnel costs.

Beer gardens to get a boost
To assist taverns operating under the new statewide indoor smoking ban, the city has eliminated a restriction on outdoor beer gardens.By a 7-3 vote, the City Council last Tuesday removed the 50-foot distance a tavern’s outdoor seating area had to be from a residence. Amending zoning regulations will allow alcohol license holders to petition the Plan Commission to obtain an Outdoor Alcohol Consumption permit.

State ban on electronics in landfills starts Sept. 1
Beginning next week, anyone who wants to get rid of that television, computer part or old VCR will have to put it somewhere other than the curb.

A new e-waste state law goes into effect Sept. 1, mandating that such items cannot be dumped in landfills.

Committee gives reluctant blessing to stormwater utility
The Committee of the Whole discussed the issue at length last Monday and decided on a 6-4 advisory vote – a technicality that refers to the council being unable to technically take any action in the committee session – to look further into shifting the way water pollution controls are funded.

City's prosecutor to face jury trial for Madison attacks
Stoughton’s prosecuting attorney, who is scheduled to represent the city in municipal court next week will soon be facing a criminal trial of his own.

Jonathan G. Evenson, 34, was charged June 21 with two felony counts of substantial battery after attacking two men in two separate incidents.

An armed 42-year-old man was gunned down by police yesterday after a standoff in the Town of Dunkirk.

Around 7:20 p.m., Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded domestic incident at 2853 Aaker Road in the town of Dunkirk after a female caller reported her husband was intoxicated and causing a disturbance, and she wanted him removed from the home, according to a news release issued by the Dane County Sheriff's Office.
