Mayor Donna Olson gets a photo with the Safety Crew. The Stoughton Safety Camp was held July 28-30 at Stoughton High School. The event, which has been held since 1994, targets youth going into third grade and covers a variety of safety topics including bicycle, water/boat safety, electrical, fire, campground and personal health and safety among others. This year 107 students participated in the three-day event.



Fish boil slated at West Koshkonong
The annual West Koshkonong Lutheran Church Norwegian Fish Boil will be held Friday, Sept. 10, at the church, 1911 Koshkonong Road in Stoughton. The menu will feature boiled cod, red potatoes, carrots and onions covered in melted better, coleslaw, rolls and lefse. Traditional Norwegian goodies such as krumkake, rosettes, sandbakkels, coffee and milk will also be served.

Stoughton author pens outdoor adventure book
In an ideal marriage of a love for nature and the written word, Lynne Diebel has written four books centered, in various ways, on the natural world.

Diebel is a retired Stoughton High School English teacher, the mother of four grown children and a Stoughton resident since 1974. Her name and image have appeared in the Oregon Observer many times in the past few years due to her work in the Friends of Badfish Creek, a small group of volunteers dedicated to preserving and improving the local stream.

Coleen Kehl is raising the barre
Coleen Kehl has been studying dance since age three, long before she was even tall enough to grasp the barre in her family’s dance studio in Madison.

“I remember a flood of sights, smells and sounds, from the dance studio itself to the music, the tapping of shoes and costumes of feathers and sequins,” Kehl recalled.

Fifty-seven years later, the Stoughton resident is still dancing and now teaches wide-eyed three year olds how to dance, too.

Stoughton native makes it big at Tommy Bartlett ski show
Despite Lake Kegonsa being just a stone’s throw away, Stoughton has never been a haven for waterskiing.

But one of its natives has made a career of the high-energy water sport, anyway.

Jeremy Armstrong, a 1996 Stoughton High School graduate, turned professional years ago and has performed all over the world. He has called Wisconsin Dells home for the past several years, and for the past three, he has served as ski show director for the famed Tommy Bartlett Water-Ski Show.

Since 1960, the Stoughton Historical Society has been keeping the city’s most valuable resource alive: Its heritage.  Though, it has struggled to maintain the city’s foundation and culture for some time now, suffering from low membership and near non-existent funds. Apartment community bonds over garden, common area
The relationships at Burntwood Townhomes in Stoughton have flourished – not overnight, but rather much like the garden that started it all – with a lot of attention, care and nurturing.

According to resident Beth Kohlhoff, the community-building started with a few residents who had the desire for a garden everyone could share. “It was right about the time the city approved a community garden – we thought it would be a great idea to have one here,” Kohlhoff said. “We asked if we could start one, and the owner, Steve Brown Apartments, just asked us to send something out gauging interest.”

Historical society continues work on Luke Stoughton home
The Luke Stoughton House is in the midst of repairs. The Stoughton Historical Society owns the 162-year-old building, which was once owned by the city’s namesake founder, and it has spent years raising more than $200,000 for its restoration.

Lake Kegonsa boat gets its own birthday party
The Mankas are the 10th owner of the popular Lake Kegonsa boat, a 20-foot, triple-cockpit model 100 runabout, featuring an upswept deck.

Not surprisingly, the boat is a charmer.  In fact, its charmed the Mankas so much, despite very generous offers, they have no plans to sell it.
